One of the nation’s worst-hit cities for foreclosures in 2007 – Bakersfield – became an epicenter of West Nile virus that year largely because of mosquitoes breeding in abandoned swimming pools, UC Davis and Kern County scientists reported Thursday.

The Central Valley city had 140 diagnosed cases, up from 51 in 2006, or a 275% increase. Over the same period, mortgage delinquency notices went up by 300%.

Since the mortgage crisis began, public health officials throughout the state, particularly in Southern California, have complained that neglected pools are contributing to West Nile infections.

But the Bakersfield study, published in the online journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, was the first to quantify the effect.

Other factors played a role. Unusually mild weather allowed virus-carrying mosquitoes to survive the winter, the study found. And mosquitoes became active earlier and multiplied more rapidly in an exceptionally warm spring and summer.

By the time public health officials noticed the first human case, the virus had exploded.

“Once we had one human case, it was almost like popcorn after that,” said Dr. Claudia Jonah, Kern County’s interim health officer. “In a year in which we should not have had any cases, we had the most in the nation.”

The exceptionally dry winter and spring had initially been expected to cut down on the number of mosquitoes. But, in fact, the drought contributed to the problem, the study found, drawing birds to the suburbs in search of water. The birds found thousands of stagnant pools, teaming with newly hatched mosquitoes.

West Nile is primarily a bird disease, transmitted among birds – and to humans – by mosquitoes. Most people who are infected by the virus do not become ill. But about 20% of those infected develop flu-like symptoms, and about one in 150 develop the most serious form of the disease, which can cause encephalitis, meningitis and death.

Aerial photographs taken over Bakersfield in July 2007 showed hundreds of suburban backyard pools with green instead of blue water, evidence that the pools were no longer being maintained.

The county used an influx of state money to launch an aggressive mosquito control program, including the first aerial spraying in 20 years.

The efforts have continued this year. Although the virus has been detected in birds and mosquitoes, there have been no human cases of West Nile in Kern County in 2008.

So far, the state has reported a total of 355 cases, with the most – 126 cases – occurring in Los Angeles County.

This home needed the window screens replaced. The owner called us for a free estimate and  we scheduled an appointment with him Saturday morning. She could only schedule the appointment for Saturdays, because she works during the week so she was looking for a mobile screen service that worked on weekends.                                                                                                                                                                                We are open for business Saturday & Sunday.

We are able to talk to both members of the household on weekends. Since both decision makers are at home during our scheduled weekend appointments the decisions needed to be made about color of  screen frames, color of screen mesh. style of sliding screen doors, color and application of retractable screen doors (invisible screens) Style and color of double set of french doors, and other added installations like pet screen, pet doors, pet grills, etc… can be done most of the time on the spot. There is no need to wait for the other to get home to consult with.

We specialize in high quality rescreening and reframing of windows and doors. All jobs are performed on-site for a custom fit. We provide all sizes of sliders with extruded aluminum frames, using only top quality fiberglass screens in nine available colors. Visa and Mastercard accepted.

All new Window & Door Screens in Sherman Oaks house

A resident of  The San Fernando Valley had purchased his new home in a beautiful part of Sherman Oaks, but all the window screens, sliding and swinging screen doors were missing. When I arrived the house looked like this.

Only a few old screens were still installed and he noticed the old anodized (grey) window screen frames were very thin  and flimsy and the screen mesh on them was the old grey mesh  which is pretty outdated. We do not recommend the grey screen mesh on certain homes and this was one of them.

The owner looked us up on the “Yellow Book “Pages and then saw our web page and checked us out online. He made an appointment with me for a free estimate at a convenient time for him. I arrived at our scheduled time and he started taking me around the house and showing me all the window and door encasement’s. I was taking measurements and showing him our catalog and then samples of screen frames, sliding screen doors and swinging screen doors. He decided on the white enamel finish frames for, both window screen and screen doors. He liked the charcoal heavy duty screen mesh which looks great with the white enamel frames.

I wrote up an free estimate for him and he was very pleased with the price, We offer different forms of payment  such as credit cards, checks and even payment plans. He was aware of them before he called us. He was happy to be able to pay with a credit card and apply his 10% discount coupon he printed  it from our web site, ecspecially because new homeowners have a very tight budget for home repairs and improvements.

It was a beautiful sunny day in Sherman Oaks and by the end of the job our customer had his windows open and was  already  enjoying the cool breeze flowing Through his new home without the concern of insects coming in and even better, began saving money on his utilities bill.
